International Business Machines Corp., seeking to undercut thesuccess of rival personal computer makers, yesterday added a bevy of new models to its Personal System/2 line of computers, including the fastest desktop machine it has offered.
IBM also cut prices on some current PS/2s by 5 to 18 percent to make room for the new models.
Analysts said the moves were an attempt to bolster the high-end of the year-old PS/2 line by making them competitive against "clones," particularly those made by Compaq Computer Corp.
IBM said the new models bring added speed and memory capacity to the line, which has been criticized for being underpowered compared with some clones.
