An ambitious Hong Kong-based hotel chain has become the latestgroup to tackle the task of reviving the old Gotham Hotel, announcingyesterday it will pay $127 million to acquire the Fifth Avenue landmark currently operating as Hotel Maxim's de Paris. Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd., through its Peninsula Group chain, will acquire the 250-room luxury hotel from a group that includes Dallas-based Pratt Hotels, Manhattan developer William Zeckendorf Jr. and other New York investors.
The new owners will remame the facility "the Peninsula." A spokeswoman for the Hongkong chain said it hopes to complete the deal in October.
She said there are no immediate plans for major changes in the hotel's operations. However, Hongkong probably will revamp the hotel's three restaurants and bring in a new management team.
Maxim's now employs more than 200 workers.
