South Street Seaport is the tourist attraction that New Yorkers most want to see in their own city, according to a Gallup poll conducted for New York Newsday.
"I just love the water, the atmosphere, the shops," said Joan Yanchewski of Manhattan, one of 1,010 randomly selected city residents interviewed by telephone about their recreational activities. "I work very close by and I go over at lunchtime just to have yogurt."
Forty-eight percent of those polled said they planned to visit the seaport soon, 27 percent said they planned to go to the Statue of Liberty and 18 percent said they planned to go to the Empire State Building.
Forty-nine percent said they planned to visit museums, but the seaport was the single attraction that New Yorkers named most often in the poll.
