Chunks of concrete are falling off the Triborough Bridge onto a 1,000-foot-long section of Astoria Park in Queens, where barricades have been erected to protect pedestrians and keep cars away.
The Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, which operates the 52-year-old bridge, said neither the problem nor emergency repairs begun yesterday to correct it would interfere with traffic.
"The loose concrete doesn't affect the structure of the bridge," TBTA spokeswoman Catherine Sweeney said, expressing concerns for pedestrian safety. TBTA Chief Engineer Michael Ascher said the repairs to the 1,000-foot-long, affected section probably would last until spring.
