It was 20 years ago that homosexuals fought back, rioting for three nights in Greenwich Village after police raided a popular homosexual bar, the Stonewall Inn, for the second time in a week.
What was known then as the Stonewall Riots is known now as the Stonewall Rebellion, and the block where it happened will soon be known as Stonewall Place.
Last week, the City Council voted, 28-2 with two members abstaining, in favor of the secondary name for the block of Christopher Street between Seventh Avenue South and Waverly Place.
Mayor Edward I. Koch, who requested the name change, is expected to sign it into law later this month.
