A coalition of South Bronx churches yesterday presented its alternative housing development plan as a compromise in what has become a political rhubarb over a vacant piece of land.
In a meeting with Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, about 15 leaders of South Bronx Churches proposed to build 500 rental apartments in the moderateand middle-income range on whatever vacant land the city makes available, in exchange for a 4.3-acre urban renewal site on which it wants to build 90 single-family homes. These homes would be part of an overall plan to construct 800 Nehemiah Homes near the urban renewal site.
The offer was a counter-proposal to a city compromise that offered the group additional sites besides those that already had been identified.
