Kennedy Airport will soon become the first in the world to begin using a machine that is 95 percent effective in screening luggage for hard-to-detect plastic explosives.
The $1.1-million machine, called a Thermal Neutron Analysis device, or TNA, is being installed this week in an undisclosed building near Trans World Airlines' international terminal and will be used primarily to screen checked luggage on some TWA overseas flights, said Fred Farrar, an FAA spokesman in Washington, D.C.
