A new ferry route from Shoreham to Connecticut, a favored proposal of local planners and business interests, wouldn't survive without multimillion-dollar subsidies, according to a report by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
But Brookhaven Town's chief planner said the study fails to examine high-speed ferries, which have spurred the latest round of interest in the route. And a Connecticut group that has approached Brookhaven about starting a high-speed run said it can be profitable on its own, because of the business that would be attracted by a 30-minute trip across Long Island Sound.
