The owner of the curved, gray granite office/retail complex on the northwest corner of Lexington Avenue and 57th Street - one of the few glittering towers of the 1980s to win widespread accolades from architecture critics - has filed for bankruptcy.
The building was noted not only for its successful realization of postmodern style, but for a daring retail strategy. Two floors below street level were developed as a lavish mall for expensive antiques shops known as the Place des Antiquaires, designed to compete with Parisian dealers for the dollars of jet-setting New York and international collectors.
