DAVID CRONENBERG'S "Naked Lunch" earned the him the best director and best screenplay awards yesterday from the National Society of Film Critics, but the group's award for the best picture of 1991 went to the British film "Life is Sweet."
"Life is Sweet," director Michael Leigh's offbeat comedy about a modern working class family, also won awards for Alison Steadman as best actress and Jane Horrocks as best supporting actress.
River Phoenix was named best actor for his role as narcoleptic hustler in "My Own Private Idaho" while Harvey Keitel was chosen as best supporting actor on the strength of his performances in "Bugsy,"...
