Margaret Heller Goldberger last saw Marian Sommerfeld 55 years ago and half a world away.
For the first time since then, Goldberger heard Sommerfeld's name last year on the steps of the Nassau County Supreme Court building in Mineola, and she remembers feeling a horrible rush of recognition.
Yesterday, she returned to those steps for the second year in a row, but this time she was not just there as a listener. Yesterday, she was one of more than 100 people who paid a brief visit to the steps to read aloud names of Nazi concentration camp victims.
Goldberger and Sommerfeld were classmates in 1938 in a Berlin school. Goldberger escaped Nazi persecution the next year by fleeing to England. She lives in Hicksville now. Sommerfeld did not escape. She died in a concentration camp.
