Its stage has been a showcase for Jason Alexander, Kathy Bates and Ron Reagan Jr., but over recent years the building deteriorated so badly that homeless people could get inside to use it as a makeshift shelter.
But now, after a year-long $4-million restoration and renovation, the Queens Theatre in the Park will be holding its opening night gala on Saturday, Oct. 16, to unveil its new look, its restored theater and its new experimental theater. The theater was shown to the news media earlier this week.
According to director Jeffrey Rosenstock, funding the renovations was not easy. "In 1989, we started with $150,000 funding for roof repairs and as we showed that more people wanted this theater back, the more money came in," he said.
