If weightlifter Christopher Onyezie of Westbury can get the necessary paperwork done, there is a good chance he will compete for his native Nigeria in the Atlanta Olympic Games this summer.
The 6-foot, 200-pounder recently was named the Outstanding Lifter in a meet sponsored by the Titan Weightlifting Club of Uniondale after lifting 297 pounds in the snatch and 363 pounds in the clean-and-jerk. While those aren't quite Olympic numbers, his Titan Club coach, Stan Bailey, says the 22-year-old just needs concentrated training to get to his goals of 352 pounds for the snatch and 462 for the clean-and-jerk. For Onyezie to qualify for the Nigerian team, Bailey must send the Nigerian sports federation a letter of recommendation that Onyezie is the best lifter Nigeria could offer at this time.
