Hundreds of firefighters, with a possible asbestos hazard adding to their problems, needed 5 1/2 hours to quell a stubborn five-alarm fire yesterday at a Consolidated Edison generating station on the Upper East Side.
The Fire Department said the fire started when a wood frame Con Ed had built around a boiler ignited.
Chief Fire Marshal Michael Vecchi said Con Ed had put up the wood frame six weeks ago to hold a sheet of plastic as part of an asbestos removal program. When the frame was built, the steam line next to it was not being used,...
