Buffalo, bears, elephants and giraffes would roam through a 200-acre wildlife preserve in Farmingville under a proposal Brookhaven town officials plan to announce today in a new attempt to boost the economy and culture of Suffolk County's largest town.
Town officials want to convince private sponsors and companies to finance the park on town-owned land in Farmingville east of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial on Bald Hill. Brookhaven Supervisor Felix Grucci intends to announce the proposal today in his State of the Town address, aides said.
If constructed, the preserve would be the largest wildlife park on Long Island. Grucci has been thinking through the idea with Jim Fowler, host of the Discovery Channel, over the past year, aides said, and hopes a wildlife park could bring as many as 600,000 visitors a year.
