Thanks to a recent $10,000 scholarship grant donated by the New York Marriott Marquis, Rosedale resident Kia Lovell, 22, of Rosedale, is getting her first big break in the theater world.
The scholarship was allocated to the New Victory Theater, site of the ground-breaking Times Square development project, which is revitalizing the seedy Midtown neighborhood. Lovell is one of 10 student apprentices in the program, all of whom aspire to contribute professionally to the cultural arts world.
"This program is giving me an opportunity to experience what it takes to bring shows to a theater, and I'm beginning to see how hard that process is," said the soft-spoken Lovell, an aspiring playwright.
The program uses a hands-on approach, exposing students to all aspects of operations, including technical (managing lighting and props), administration (including billing and mailing lists), box office (ticket sales), marketing (advertising and public relations) and program-selection responsibilities (previewing productions or performers).
