GENERALLY, there are two types of vocalists: singers and oversingers. The primary purpose of singers is to serve the song. They will adjust their vocal power to suit the lyrics. The main goal is to interpret the tune, and singers will accomplish this by any vocal means necessary.
Oversingers belt and blast through a song. Lyrics are a secondary concern, merely a loose framework for a series of melismatic yelps, ear-shattering notes and enthusiastic growls. The main goal of oversingers is simply to show off and sing every song as if they were in the finals of "Star Search." After all, who needs subtlety when you can hold a note for more than 30 seconds?
Unfortunately, Jon Secada falls into the latter category. At times, he seems more interested in brandishing his vocal strength than he is in merely singing the song. Too often throughout his recording career, he has substituted pure bombast for soul. The result? Well, Secada may hit the high notes, but he misses the true...
