No other zoo in the country could take them, but two orphaned Montana mountain lion cubs have found a new home - at the Queens Zoo.
There's only one problem: The zoo is endangered by city budget cuts. Located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, it is in danger of closing July 1 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed cuts.
Yesterday, scores of elementary schoolchildren gathered at the zoo to rally for its preservation and saw the 11-week-old female and male cubs gamboling in their enclosure.
The children held up crayon drawings of animals and chanted, "Save our Zoo !" One of them, Julian Montano, 5, of PS 28 in Flushing, said: "We got to save our zoo, because we have to."
