WASHINGTON - U.S. Reps. Dave Weldon and Debbie Wasserman Schultz both grew up in Suffolk County, but the two Florida lawmakers could not have been farther apart in the debate over whether Congress ought to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case.
Weldon, a Republican and Amityville native who represents central Florida, introduced the bill that ultimately led to Congress approving legislation allowing Schiavo's parents to file suit in federal court seeking to have her feeding tube reinserted.
Melville's own Wasserman Schultz, a freshman Democrat who represents South Florida, helped lead opposition to the bill on the House floor, arguing that Congress had no role to play in the dispute.
