The Loews theater chain has a history that parallels that of cinema itself. A new exhibit at the American Museum of the Moving Image uses this one particular corporate prism to illustrate the development of the American film industry, flashing back to bygone days when movie palaces really were plush monuments to celluloid fantasies. "From Penny Arcade to Megaplex," which runs through January, boasts a ton of vintage movie memorabilia, but it also focuses notably on some legendary theaters in New York: the Kings in Brooklyn, the Valencia in Queens, the Paradise in the Bronx, among others. Archival footage from movie premieres, including "Gone With the Wind," "Some Like It Hot" and "Guys and Dolls" will also be on view.
