The Roosevelt Island Tramway was expected to reopen this morning, more than four months after the cable car system malfunctioned and left dozens of people stranded over the East River for nearly 12 hours.
"We're very happy to return the tram service. Very, very happy," said Catherine Johnson, vice president of operations for the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp., which owns and runs the system.
The agency was ready to resume the tram's regular schedule when "we got the news we were looking for," a certificate of registration from the state Department of Labor that signals the system is safe, Johnson said yesterday.
