Abstract

This study examined the perceived quality of interpersonal communication and the role it plays on emotional intelligence and workplace engagement, employing a self-report survey approach for data collection. The study followed an exploratory research design, which is a most appropriate research method for research questions that have not been explored sufficiently, such as the ones in this research. While the data obtained from this research design are not usually conclusive, the design provides a deeper understanding of the research topic. The researcher utilized a flexible design of the research which allowed them to explore multiple facets of the association between emotional intelligence and the perceived quality of interpersonal communication and workplace engagement in the workplace. The major findings of this study were that there is a significant, positive relationship between emotional intelligence and the level of work engagement. Secondly, the interaction between age and emotional intelligence on the dependent variable of work engagement was statistically significant. Next, there was no significant interaction between socioeconomic status and emotional intelligence on the dependent variable of work engagement. Lastly, there was a significant interaction between interpersonal communication and emotional intelligence on the dependent variable of work engagement.
