Trapped by the dictatorship forces, Stuart Edgard Angel Jones spent three days hiding in Flamengo's boat garage, at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, before going underground in the early 1970s. At the same venue, he had stood on the podium years earlier to receive the title of two-time Rio de Janeiro champion in the "eight" category. But what made Stuart go down in history is a sad and violent episode: he disappeared, in May 1971, after being arrested and tortured at the Galeão Air Base.
Bringing Stuart's image back to Flamengo is the goal of the "Places of Memory" program, conducted by the Ministry of Human Rights. The first attempt was made in 2010, when the same folder promoted the installation of a memorial in honor of the former journalist at the nautical headquarters of Flamengo, in Lagoa, a few meters from where Stuart hid from repression. The bronze plaque and the sculpture that supported it, however, have been missing since the occasion of the 2016 Olympic Games. The pieces would have been removed to adapt the space to the rowing and canoeing events of the event.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), triggered by the Grupo Tortura Nunca Mais, opened a "news of fact" under the Regional Prosecutor's Office for the Rights of the Citizen, to start an investigation into the whereabouts of the material.
