SHORT-TRACK SPEEDSKATING -- MEN'S 1,000m: Preliminaries, Today, 6:45 p.m., Delta Center
Japan's Takafumi Nishitani shocked the speedskating world when he came out of nowhere to win a gold medal in short track at the Nagano Games four years ago. But he might surprise even more people if he returns to the podium in Salt Lake City.
That's because Nishitani is competing barely six weeks after breaking his ankle so severely that he still has four metal pins holding it together.
"Everybody thinks that because of the injury, I might not make it," he said through an interpreter. "That makes me try harder, to let people know I can still do it. Nothing is impossible."
