Several world-renowned guitarists are expected to perform or teach seminars this week during the 13th annual Guitar Foundation of America International Convention, held at the California State University, Northridge, campus.
Hundreds of educators, music students, artists, vendors and craftspeople - from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, England, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia and Spain - will attend the gathering, according to Music Professor Ron Purcell, chairman of the guitar program in CSUN's Music Department.
"It brings teachers together from around the world, and they get to listen to lectures from their colleagues. A lot of new ideas are exchanged," said Purcell, who established the university's guitar curriculum in 1967. In the years since then, the guitar program has grown to pre-eminence in the 22-campus CSU system, he said.
