"Mascara" is a nicely made, well-acted independent film that unfortunately just doesn't have much to say. Writer-director Linda Kandel, a native Angeleno, has made a good-looking movie that supports stereotypes about L.A. and about "chick flicks" in general.
The film centers around three pretty, upper-middle-class women living in Los Angeles - Ione Skye, Lumi Cavazos and Amanda de Cadenet - who are all facing problems and transitions in their lives as they near age 30. One is getting married; one is unhappily married; one is in a dead-end relationship with an older but immature man, played quite well by former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones.
Stereotype No. 1: In chick flicks, men are mostly hateful losers; women define themselves by their relationships with men, then kvetch about it. One husband is a philanderer. One is a philanderer AND a...
