Juwan Howard scored 21 points and Jalen Rose added 20 as No. 8 Michigan defeated Penn State 81-72 Wednesday in Ann Arbor, putting the Wolverines (21-6, 13-4) back into a first-place tie with Purdue in the Big 10.
Penn State (12-14, 5-12) played without center John Amaechi, who has a sprained ankle.
Michigan St. 94, Indiana 78
Shawn Respert scored 40 points for Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans (19-10, 10-7 Big 10), who probably cinched an NCAA bid with the victory, overcame a career game from Alan Henderson, who scored 41 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for No. 18 Indiana (18-8, 11-6). The Hoosiers have lost three of their last four.
Wisconsin 95, Iowa 71
Michael Finley scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Badgers (17-9, 8-9) rekindled their NCAA tournament hopes with a Big 10 win in Madison, Wis.
Midwestern Collegiate
Tony Tolbert had 21 points to lead Detroit Mercy to a 70-65 victory over Evansville in the championship game in Indianapolis. The league lost its automatic berth for one year after Duquesne left the conference last year.
North Atlantic
Drexel scored the last 11 points of the game to defeat Maine 86-78 in Philadelphia to clinch the conference championship and the automatic NCAA tournament berth.
Malik Rose had 19 points and 15 rebounds and Mike Wisler added 18 points for the Dragons (25-4), whose only other NCAA appearance came in 1985-86.
