Abstract

Positive parent-child relationships are shown to improve the overall well-being of the child and parent by reducing parental stress and increasing the likelihood of success for the child. Positive parent-child relationships can also reduce the risk of child abuse and maltreatment. The purpose of this project was to design a parenting program to meet the specific needs of the Latino immigrant population, to identify potential funding sources, and to complete a grant application to fund a new parenting program for community mental health centers located in Los Angeles County Service Planning Area 6 (SPA 6). The proposed program components will include workshops on psychoeducation, a support group for parents, linkage to a therapist for the parent(s), and resource fairs. This 8-week program will provide services to parents of children ages 0-16. A comprehensive literature search was completed to identify risk factors and protective factors for this community and identify the effectiveness of current parenting programs. The grant proposal is for research learning purposes only, and therefore the application will not be submitted for the successful completion of this project.
