The Roosevelt Island tram will shut down at midnight Saturdaywhen its liability insurance policy expires, state officials saidyesterday. Thousands of people who use the tram to get from Roosevelt Island to Manhattan will have to find alternate routes - most likely buses through Queens and over the Queensboro Bridge - until the Legislature resolves the issue by authorizing millions of dollars for a new insurance policy or by authorizing the state to insure the tram itself.
Tramway manager Paul Jordan said the tram serves about 150,000 riders a month. Last year, when the fare was 90 cents, revenue was $1.62 million, he said. About 5,100 people live on the island.
