MIDTOWN / Court Order Ends Hotel Workers' Picketing Hotel on Park Avenue South brought their signs to the hotel owners' midtown restaurant this month, but a temporary court injunction quickly stopped the picketing.
The hotel workforce, which joined the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union last fall, started their strike more than six weeks ago after contract talks broke down.
Peter Ward, vice president of the union's Local 6, said the employees were being paid from $4.50 to $5 with no sick leave or vacation and no health benefits. "There are people working at the hotel who haven't had a day off for two years," Ward said.
Under the union contract with hotels citywide negotiated last year, maids, for example, earn $332 weekly and have a full range of benefits, Ward said.
