ANNIVERSARIES
The Roosevelt Island tramway, which has carried 20 millionpeople across the East River, turns 10 years old today. The aerial cable car linking Manhattan with the East River islandof 5,200 residents was the first tramway used for mass transit in the United States, said former state Urban Development Corp. President Ed Logue.
Since its opening May 17, 1976, the tram has been used in television commercials, the opening credits of the CBS show "Archie Bunker's Place" and played a major role in the Sylvester Stallone film "Nighthawks."
