WHEN TEXAS celebrates its 150th an niversary of independence nextyear, you can be sure that the Alamo will not be forgotten. Thereis talk of enshrining the remains of a soldier believed killed in the Battle of the Alamo within the modern cenotaph standing across the plaza from the old mission and creating a Texan Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The fact that the remains appear to be those of a young man, between 15 and 17 years of age, and of Hispanic origin, is immaterial. The remains are the only ones ever found after a number of archeological digs. And there is talk, too, of another commemorative coin to mark the occasion.
The cenotaph, which means empty or hollow tomb, is a modern addition to the sights around the old Alamo. The monument was designed by an Italian sculptor, Pompeo Coppini, and dedicated by the State of Texas in 1936 to the heroes of the Alamo. The tomb has a base of Texas...
