The New York City Public Health Research Institute's speciallydesigned laboratory for AIDS research began operation Thursday,according to institute director, Dr. Richard F. Novick. Equipped at a cost of $100,000, the laboratory will specialize in biochemical research into the structure of the AIDS virus and its life cycle. The laboratory is specially designed to keep the live virus from escaping.
Founded in 1942, the institute played a leading role in the development of the polio vaccine. In 1983, the gene responsible for the toxic shock syndrome was discovered in an institute laboratory.
