A Friendship Fit For Front Page? The fact that Bernard Kalb resigned as State Department spokesman this week was definitely news, and was covered inside most papers yesterday. Media junkies were kind of curious, however, why the story was the lead article on the front page of The New York Times. Was it that monumental an event? The fact that Bernard has been a close friend of both executive editor Abe Rosenthal and acting managing editor Arthur Gelb for more than 25 years might have had something to do with it. Although a trend was established when male hearthrobs Don Johnson and Bruce Willis jumped from screen to vinyl with record deals, don't hold your breath waiting for the Nicholas Cage album, even though Cage sings several songs in Francis Coppola's "Peggy Sue Got Married," and one Cage-crooned classic, Dion's "I Wonder Why," is featured on the film's soundtrack. But Cage, who plays an aspiring singer and love interest of Kathleen Turner, made it clear to us he'd rather be remembered for his acting.
