FLATBUSH / 4-Stars Awarded Plan for Reopening Theater The proposal to reopen the old Loew's Kings Theater is getting some members of the Flatbush Development Corp. excited these days.
The idea, drawn up by real estate consultant Jack Freeman, has been to bring the dormant theater back to life as a mixed-use property, offering theater presentations and retail shops or restaurants.
"It's a magnificent building," said Wendy Weller, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit Flatbush group, which hired Freeman to do this study. For about 10 years, the group has been receiving money from the city to oversee maintenance and security at the old theater, which was closed in 1977, the result of declining movie audiences and increasing operating costs. The development group has since been seeking a way to bring the Loew's Kings back to life.
Today, the group will host a tour of the facility for participants in the 10th annual Conference of the League of Historic American Theaters. The tour will be followed by a panel discussion, at Prospect Hall, where future uses for the theater will be explored by a group of panelists, including Freeman.
