Abstract

STORYTELLERS have always threatened those in POWER, but today the STAKES are dire, as book bans and library censuresINCREASE across the UNITED STATES. Where I Found Myself Growing up in a small town in Mississippi, Jesmyn Ward learned about empathy —and identity —through the books in her elementary-school library “When I heard my book was banned, I felt hopeful ? [...]the Wipers, hostile aliens, have settled on Earth and are determined to eradicate all human knowledge by destroying books. In the show, the Wipers raid dilapidated libraries covered in ivy and the crumpled snowfall of old paper, ripping apart books and toppling card-catalog cabinets.
