Abstract
The Westside Community High School instituted a program of acceleration in mathematics in the fall of 1955. The intent of this pro- gram was to provide able students with a more challenging curriculum in mathematics, and to enable them to extend their depth of study beyond the traditional four-year program. As a result of the acceptance of this program, many curricular changes were introduced in other academic areas to encourage academically talented students.
Acceleration of the science program in the fall of 1956 per- mitted selected students to take biology in their freshman year. This enabled students to elect additional courses in zoology, physiology, or to enroll in a science seminar upon completion of physics and chemistry. Ability grouping in English classes, the addition of advanced placement sections in American History, seminar courses in Far East history, Russian history, and World Literature were among later provisions for talented students. The foreign language program was also revised with the introduction of languages for high school credit at the eighth grade level.
