Abstract

From the beginning of physical education programs. in the United States, isotonic exercises have been used to build strength and develop endurance in students. During the latter part of the nineteenth century, isotonic exercises were associated with Swedish and German gymnastics. When the Swedish and German programs began to fade and sports became more prominent in physical education programs, running and calisthenics became popular isotonic exercises used by physical educators and athletic coaches.
