¿Todos los ricoshombres del rey? Privilegios rodados, rentas regias y servicio al monarca en Castilla (1252-1350)

Abstract

Este artículo analiza los ricoshombres castellanos entre 1252 y 1350 a través del estudio de los privilegios rodados de este siglo y de los excepcionales registros de cancillería de Sancho IV. Se aborda así la noción de ricahombría, la composición y extensión de este grupo y sus diferencias regionales e internas. La lista de confirmantes de privilegios rodados muestra el crecimiento de este colectivo a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo xiii, aunque no todos los ricoshombres figuraban en estos documentos. El análisis de las tierras concedidas por el monarca a los nobles permite explorar las notables diferencias de este grupo y el servicio, en esencia militar, que se debía a cambio de estas rentas. Finalmente, se cuestiona la posibilidad de ascenso social que ofrecía el servicio al rey frente a la consolidación y fortalecimiento de los linajes tradicionales que muestran las listas de confirmantes de privilegios rodados y la distribución de tierras regias.

This article analyses the Castilian ricoshombres between 1252 and 1350 through the study of the royal privileges issued by the royal chancery during this century and the exceptional fiscal records from the reign of Sancho IV. Therefore, it discusses the concept of ricahombría, the individuals which comprised this group, and its regional and internal differences. The list of confirmers of royal privileges shows the growth experienced by this group from the second half of the 13th century onwards; however, not every ricohombre was recorded in these documents. The analysis of the tierras (royal revenues) granted by the king to the nobles will allow to explore the stark differences among magnates and the (military) service they owed in exchange of these revenues. Lastly, it will be discussed the chances of social promotion offered by serving the king in a context in which the list of confirmers of the royal privileges and the way royal revenues were assigned highlight the strengthening of the most prestigious Castilian noble families.
