Abstract

Athletic apparel is becoming increasingly popular, but the clothes are often marketed to younger, thinner individuals. Research shows women experience pressure to meet societal standards for appearance that shift as they age, which may affect their body image and confidence. This study aimed to determine if body satisfaction is influenced by apparel and exercise self-efficacy in exercisers 55 and older (n = 143). Also, we wanted to understand the needs and experiences of older adults shopping for athletic clothing.

A series of quantitative and qualitative analysis resulted in significant findings and common themes. We determined that women are typically less satisfied with their body image than men and a meaningful relationship between body satisfaction and exercise self-efficacy was supported. Lastly, the participants of this study gave their input on the current market of athletic apparel. Common themes that arose were the importance the comfort, proper footwear, and the cost of athleticwear.
