In this article, the bases of the project to edit the Poema del Cid that the I Marqués de Pidal presented to the Real Academia Española in 1861 are fully exposed for the first time. These bases were preserved in their entirety in the book 24 of minutes of the institution. Besides, the production of this document is contextualized in the history of the literary editions of the academy as well as in the editorial history of the song itself: the collections of classics projected by the RAE at the beginning and in the middle of the XIXth century are presented, and the characteristics of the edition of the cantar are studied in relation to the other extant editions at that time. Finally, the article presents a useful case study to understand the state of medieval Hispanic philology at the time: both in terms of the development of ecdotic criteria and their integration among the tasks of the RAE.
