Thrissur: Malabar devaswom board officials had to suspend their move to take over the Kapliyangad Sree Bhagavathy temple, near Vadakkekad following protests from the temple management committee and a section of the devotees, on Thursday. The board officials had come to take over the administration of the temple with elaborate security cover, including a large contingent of police and fire brigade personnel, as well as with arrangements like water cannons, in the early hours of the day. However, the temple committee officials were able to mobilize a large number of devotees, including women, quickly and they resisted the takeover by chanting bhajans. However, careful handling of the situation by the authorities averted any untoward incident. Board executive officer Ajin R Chandran said he has come to take over the temple based on the order of the high court. Justice Anil K Narendran and Justice G Girish of the high court in their order on Jan 9 had directed the police to accord adequate and necessary protection for the takeover of the administration of the temple, Chandran said.He said the board had listed the Kapliyangad temple as one of the temples under it, way back in 1993. The board had received some corruption complaints from the devotees about the managing committee members and an executive officer was appointed to run the temple in Dec 2022, after a probe by the board, he said. However, temple managing committee president Pramod said they have already filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the HC order. Committee secretary V Dhanesh said that some of the members of the committee were expelled following complaints of financial misappropriation a couple of years ago. "RTI replies received by us made it clear that those expelled members were behind the complaints against us," he said.
