KIERAN Hickey, one of Ireland's most successful film and documentary directors, has died at the age of 57. From a poor working-class Dublin background, he won a scholarship to university but his widowed mother could not afford to let him go and he went to work as an insurance clerk.
But Hickey had been a film buff from an early age, and after two years with the insurance company, he quit and went to the London Film School. He returned to Dublin and set up his own company, BAC Films, and started by making commercials for Radio Telefis Eireann.
