SONY and two of its Hollywood subsidiaries have been accused of blocking the American release of the British film Return from the River Kwai because of its anti-Japanese content.
The film, starring Edward Fox and Denholm Elliott, was given a Royal premiere in London in March 1989 and has been shown in 40 countries, including Japan. In the United States, however, it is shelf-bound, due to a six year legal battle.
The $10 million ( pounds 6.7m) production is based on a book detailing mistreatment of Allied PoWs who survived building the infamous railway in Burma and Thailand. The producer, Kurt Unger, claims that at a meeting in Tokyo with Sony president Norio Ohga in 1992, Mr Ohga admitted...
