NICKY GOOCH broke the British record and finished in silver medal place overall at the European speed skating championships in Graz, Austria. Britain's Olympic 500 metres bronze medallist was second to Mirko Vuillermin of Italy in three of the four distances skated.
Gooch smashed the British 500m record which Wilf O'Reilly regained earlier this year. The new record is 43.19sec, which is the third fastest time ever skated. Vuillermin broke his own world record with 42.99sec.
