In Mexico, civil society and activists estimate that for every visible transfeminicide, there are at least two or three others that remain unknown. Some of the obstacles faced are the omissions of the prosecutors' offices and the differentiated advances in the recognition of trans identities.
Mexico is in the second place in murders of trans people, only behind Brazil, according to the international registry Transrespect. The organization itself clarifies that the reality is worse than what the numbers show.
In its methodology, the international group - which for Mexico counts 33 murders between January and September 2023, and 701 in the last 15 years - describes that its data collection is based on internet searches, cooperation with allied organizations, and contributions from activists and researchers.
