Abstract

The research work reported in my books and papers was funded by EPSRC and its predecessors, and by the Teaching Company Directorate and Industry. It is wide-ranging in scope, but its aim has been to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the construction industry. From the main body of work, the primary theme chosen is the management process within contractors' companies, starting with the acquisition of contracts through bidding underpinned by the estimating process. Estimating was seen as a fulcrum management function within construction companies, being the basis of all bids and providing the data for subsequent management functions.
