Furanocoumarins, benz-2-pyrone compounds fused at the 6,7 (linear) or 7,8 (angular) positions with a furan ring, have a limited distribution among plants; they occur most frequently in the subfamily Apioideae of the Umbelliferae. Biosynthetically, all furanocoumarins derive from umbelliferone,
