Abstract (summary)

Objective linguistic methods are used to devise a technique of analyzing rhetorical prose by uncovering the underlying patterns of the prose. Selected passages from three English Renaissance authors are studied through schematic diagrams which display the patterns of their prose by balancing linguistic elements.

The technique is used to examine and compare the prose styles of John Lyly, Thomas Lodge, and Thomas Nashe. A general overview of rhetorical style and its study through this method is included.
