Abstract

Automatic Identification is one of the fastest growing technologies in our present day economy. The reason for such growth is the impact it is having in various industries. Industries such as defense, automotive, grocery, health care, and retail sales have implemented this technology resulting in significant benefits. The Construction Industry, as a whole, has not embraced this technology and therefore lags behind in widespread utilization. Several unique technologies comprise Automatic Identification. The one that has found more acceptance and use is bar coding. Properly utilized, bar coding has produced substantial cost savings because of reduced time for data entry and improved data accuracy. Currently bar code applications are being developed in the Industrial Construction Industry in such areas as takeoff, purchasing, material control, and warehouse inventory and maintenance. These applications as well as others need implementing so that the Construction Industry can experience some of the same benefits as these other industries. This, in turn, will help it become more efficient, productive, and competitive.
